The family of a man shot by the Los Angeles Police Department in Koreatown earlier this month is demanding answers from the city.

Yong Yang, 40, was killed May 2 after he allegedly waved a kitchen knife at officers who arrived in the 400 block of Gramercy Place following reports of a man suffering from mental illness.

The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, which initially responded to the reports, told officers that Yang suffered from bipolar disorder with schizoaffective disorder, and police said in a news release that he exhibited “erratic and threatening behavior.” have demonstrated.

However, according to the family’s attorney, Robert Sheahen, Yang’s family claims that police sent nine officers to the scene and that those officers responded with a “military-style maneuver.” The family is also represented by Alison Triessl, also a legal analyst for KTLA.

“How could this happen to my beautiful boy?” asked Myung Sook Yang, Yang’s mother. “We tried to do everything right to get him help. We called the mental health department and instead of helping him, they invited the police to our house and shot him.”
