A truck traveling south on Interstate 5 past State Route 163 struck and killed a pedestrian early Saturday morning.

OnScene.TV reported that the incident occurred at about 2:35 a.m. after an ambulance suddenly swerved. Two Marines in the ambulance told the news agency that they saw the pedestrian at the time but were unable to avoid hitting him.

A San Diego Police patrol car driving behind the truck was unable to stop and struck the vehicle in lane 3.

The pedestrian ended up under the truck and died at the scene of the accident.

The California Highway Patrol responded along with the San Diego Police and Fire Departments. None of the occupants of the vehicles were injured.

The highway was closed, causing a traffic jam that lasted past 3:15 a.m. as cars were stuck in the southbound lanes. Caltrans San Diego reported on social media about an accident in the same area just before 3 a.m. and said the lanes were reopened at 8 a.m.
