ORIGINAL REPORT: Teen in custody after another teen killed in accidental shooting in southwest Houston, HPD says

Since the suspect is a minor, authorities are not releasing his name or a photo.

The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the St. James Place Apartments, 6503 Wanda Ln., near Fondren. Police said they were called from there to a call about a shooting and found the 13-year-old unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound in an upstairs apartment.

Paramedics confirmed the teenager’s death at the scene of the accident.

According to investigators, the victim and the suspect were in the apartment when the suspect fired the gun, injuring the 13-year-old.

The victim’s identity is pending confirmation by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The 15-year-old was taken into custody without incident.

According to initial reports on Sunday, the teenagers were playing with the weapon.

Investigators said one of the teens, who lived there and had the gun, fled the scene while the other stayed and called 911.
