USA raises alert level for military bases in

The US military has raised the alert level at several of its bases in Europe, several US media outlets reported. The alert level has been raised to “Charlie”, the second highest level, ABC News and CNN reported, citing anonymous officials.

This alert level is activated “when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating a possible threat of terrorist activity or attacks against persons or facilities,” the US military explains on its website. The highest alert level, “Delta,” is activated when a terrorist attack is underway or imminent.

While the US European Command did not confirm the status change, it said, “We remain vigilant.” The Pentagon said, “Due to a number of factors that could impact the safety of US service members and their families stationed in the European theater, the US European Command is doubling the need for vigilance during the summer months.”

The U.S. State Department is currently advising American citizens in Germany, where the U.S. European Command headquarters is located, to exercise increased caution due to the risk of terrorist activities.

European countries are on high alert following an attack in a Moscow suburb in March that ISIS claimed responsibility for, killing around 150 people. France has also raised its alert level ahead of the Paris Olympics, and Germany is currently hosting the 2024 European Football Championship.
