Arkansas State Police trooper arrested for DWI, resigns

31-year-old Mitch Smothers was arrested and charged with DWI after he crashed on Winn Creek Road.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — An Arkansas State Police (ASP) trooper has resigned after being arrested for driving while intoxicated in Washington County, according to a press release.

31-year-old Mitch Smothers was arrested and charged with DWI after he crashed on Winn Creek Road in Winslow. His vehicle rolled over during the crash with two children inside, the report said.

Aside from the DWI, he is also charged with endangering the welfare of a minor. Smothers was taken to the Washington County Detention Center, according to ASP.

“I’m deeply disappointed and thank God no one was injured. I’ve said from day one that when we mess up, we will dress up and fess up. This is a difficult moment for the Arkansas State Police organization, but we will manage it with transparency and integrity,” said Colonel Mike Hagar.

Smothers has been with ASP since 2021, according to the release.
