A Burbank elementary school teacher was killed by her own son, police said

A Burbank man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his mother, a beloved Burbank Unified School District teacher.

According to Burbank police, officers and paramedics went to a home in the 800 block of North Avon Street around 10 p.m. Tuesday and found 57-year-old Karyn Lombardo unconscious.

“Officers and paramedics performed life-saving measures, but (Lombardo) was pronounced dead at the scene,” a police statement said.

Lombardo was a teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School, district officials confirmed. Police said she lived in the home with her adult son and husband.

Based on the information and evidence collected at the home, police arrested 25-year-old Kyle Lombardo and charged him with murder. Authorities say he killed his mother “during an argument.”

“Her dedication, warmth and passion for teaching have touched the lives of many students and colleagues,” Burbank Unified School District Superintendent John Paramo said in a statement. “Their profound impact and loss to this community will be deeply felt throughout the city of Burbank.”

Paramo said Lombardo began her career in 1990 as a bilingual teacher at Joaquin Miller Elementary School. Three years later, she moved to Harte Elementary School, where she held several teaching positions including performing arts, choir and kindergarten.

School psychologists and social workers were on site at Harte Elementary to provide counseling to students and staff.

“Throughout her highly successful career, Ms. Lombardo touched the lives of thousands of students, parents and colleagues who will mourn this loss in the days to come,” Paramo said.

Kyle Lombardo was being held in lieu of $2 million bail.
