Rays’ Amed Rosario escapes serious injury after frightening incident

PITTSBURGH – Rays infielder/outfielder Amed Rosario seemingly escaped serious injury after being hit in the face by a 100 mph pitch during Saturday’s game against the Pirates.

According to the Rays, Rosario suffered only cuts to his face and no broken bones.

He was hit by Jared Jones’ 99.6 mph pitch in the first inning; the sound of the impact on his helmet or protective cover could be heard throughout PNC Park.

As Rosario fell to one knee, the next batter, Jose Siri, ran over and signaled the Rays staff to rush onto the field.

Head coach Joe Benge quickly attended to Rosario, covering part of his face with a towel. The two walked off the field together to the team bench.

Rosario, who had started at third base, was replaced in the lineup by Richie Palacios. Palacios played second base while Jose Caballero moved to third base.

Brandon Lowe, who started the game as designated hitter, had to leave the field in the fifth inning with a bruised right foot. He was also hit by a pitch in the first inning before scoring. He was replaced by Isaac Paredes.
