Teenagers charged with raping Jewish girl in…

Boys charged with rape, violence and hate crimes against 12-year-old girl.

Two adolescent boys in a Paris suburb have been provisionally charged with raping a 12-year-old girl and committing religious violence, French authorities said. The incident has caused widespread shock and concern, particularly given the recent rise in anti-Semitic acts in France in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The girl reported the rape on Saturday in the town of Courbevoie, after which three boys aged 12 and 13 were arrested, prosecutors said. Two of the boys were charged on Tuesday with charges including aggravated gang rape of a minor under 15, violence, religiously motivated public insult, death threats, attempted extortion and unauthorized recording or broadcasting of sexual images.

Prosecutors did not disclose the girl’s religion or identity, in line with France’s hate crime victim protection guidelines. However, Jewish leader Elie Korchia later revealed in an interview that the victim was Jewish and that Palestine was mentioned during the attack. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal condemned the incident as an anti-Semitic attack.

The two defendants are currently in custody, while the third boy has been called as a witness and placed in a special education program. The prosecution noted that all three boys expressed their regret to the victim without directly admitting their involvement.

Politicians from various parties have condemned the attack. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin described it as “appalling” and stressed that preventing such violence is a social challenge. The incident occurred ahead of the upcoming French parliamentary elections, in which increased attention is being paid to security and immigration.

In response to the incident, hundreds of people gathered outside Paris City Hall to protest against anti-Semitism. Many demonstrators held signs with messages of solidarity and condemnation of such acts of violence.
