Man confesses to killing child and mother; welcomes death penalty

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Daniel Callihan, 36, has admitted to murdering a three-year-old after her mother, Callie Brunett, was killed and her children, including her six-year-old, were kidnapped.

During his transport back to the Rankin County Jail, he told the cameras, “Sober, no drugs in my system, I did it. I have no reason for what I did. I just want to say that I was sober and I only took LexaPro – and then no LexaPro – and I was also diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.”

Callihan, who is on suicide watch, said he is not suicidal. He said, “I would kill myself” and expressed no intention to contest the charges. He welcomed the death penalty, saying, “For what I did, lethal injection is the easiest thing for me.”

He said he had only been released from a mental institution two weeks ago.

Victoria Cox, 32, was arrested along with Callihan on Thursday. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said Cox had recently had an intimate relationship with Callihan.

Rankin County on Friday released the charges against Callihan, including felony sexual assault and armed robbery, without specifying the number of charges. TPSO said he faces at least one count of premeditated murder locally.

Cox is accused of capital crimes and sexual assault.

Sheriff Edwards confirmed that no other suspects are currently being investigated at the scene.
