DHEC issues air quality warning for Friday

Air Quality Warning for Upstate issued by South Carolina DHEC for Friday

SEE, EVEN THE SKY LOOKS HOT, DON’T IT? SOUTH CAROLINA DHEC HAS DECLARED A CODE ORANGE DAY OF ACTION FOR TOMORROW, WHICH MEANS THERE WILL LIKELY BE UNHEALTHY LEVELS OF AIR POLLUTION. CHIEF METEOROLOGIST CHRIS JUSTUS IS WITH US NOW. CHRIS, HOW LONG CAN WE EXPECT THIS EXTREME HEAT? UNFORTUNATELY, IT LOOKS LIKE WE’RE STUCK RIGHT HERE FOR THE NEXT WEEK, WHERE WE’RE AT 90 TO 93 DEGREES. AND THE AIR IS REALLY STILL FOR A LOT OF IT. SO BECOME READY FOR MORE OF THESE CODE ORANGE DAYS. LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW. WE’VE GOT A LIGHT WIND. IT TAKES MORE THAN THAT TO JUST SHARPEN UP THE ATMOSPHERE. IN A HEALTHY ATMOSPHERE THERE ARE WINDS THAT SWIRLE EVERYTHING AROUND, ALMOST LIKE A BLENDER. SO EVERYTHING IS MIXED UP. THAT’S OK IF THERE’S NOT MUCH WIND AND IT’S SO HOT AND HUMID, THE AIR JUST STAYS STILL. AND THAT’S UNHEALTHY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS LIKE ASTHMA OR ALLERGIES. IT CAN MAKE THOSE EFFECTS WORSE FOR YOU AND YOU’LL JUST GET TOTALLY DRY IN THE SUPER DOPPLER 4 HD. AIR QUALITY ALERT NOW UNTIL TOMORROW. THERE’S ANOTHER ONE FOR TOMORROW. A CODE ORANGE DAY, SO BE CAREFUL AS WE LOOK OUTSIDE. YES, IT’S HOT, 30 DEGREES, EAST-SOUTHEAST WINDS AT ABOUT 10 KM PER HOUR. IN SPARTANBURG IT’S 30 DEGREES, IN ASHEVILLE IT’S 27 DEGREES. SO IT’S HOT, BUT IT’S GOING TO GET HOTTER. THE 12 HOUR FORECAST LOOKS LIKE THIS. TONIGHT IT’S GOING TO DOWN TO OVER 60 DEGREES. THAT’S ALL.
