Man dies in horrific accident after electrocution in hot tub on vacation

The man and the woman were both shocked by an “electrical discharge.”

A man died from an electric shock in a hot tub while on vacation in Mexico.

Jorge Guillen, 43, of Texas, died from an electric shock in a hot tub while vacationing at a private resort in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, Mexican authorities said.

Lizette Zambrano, 35, was also taken to hospital after the incident; her condition remains critical, relatives of the couple said.

According to Sonora state authorities, the couple were in the hot tub at the Sonoran Sea Resort shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday (June 11).

Eyewitnesses initially noticed that the couple was not moving in the hot tub before calling emergency services and attempting resuscitation, the Attorney General’s Office said, according to the Daily Mail.

A witness told officers that she tried to get into the tub to help the couple, but was shocked by the water.

A video documenting the incident is also making the rounds on social media and local media, showing crowds gathered around the hot tub while others can be heard screaming for “help” as someone performs CPR on a person lying on the ground, CBS reports.

As The Daily Mail reported, a friend of Lizette posted on On Facebook, she expressed her condolences over the tragic incident.

She wrote: “When I woke up this morning we received a message from our best friend’s mother. It’s not the kind of message you want to wake up to.

“As many of you have seen on social media and the news, a tragic event has occurred. I will not go into detail here.

“We would greatly appreciate it if you all would donate to bring Jorge home and help with the medical costs.”

“Lizzette still has a long way to go before she gets well again and we are all here to help her.”

To help with the costs, a GoFundMe campaign has now been set up, with a post saying: “Our best friends were in a terrible accident.

“Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends.

“The love they shared was eternal. We ask for your help in bringing him home and assisting with medical expenses for her.”

At the time of this writing, GoFundMe has already reached $24,000 of its goal.

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sonora wrote on its Facebook page that an investigation into the cause of the “electrical discharge” is currently underway.

They further added that they would release the details of the incident later.
