INDIANA (WTHI) – Veterans will soon have a new system of protection. Indiana’s Green Alert system goes into effect July 1.

The green alarm works similarly to a silver or yellow alarm.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed the law in March.

The new alert system allows police departments to issue alerts about missing or at-risk veterans within 48 hours.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Matt Ames says veterans are sometimes afraid to admit they need help.

“In the state of Indiana, 140 veterans have committed suicide. Passing this bill is just another way our lawmakers are trying to ensure they get the right care,” Ames said.

To issue a green alert, law enforcement needs two things. They need a description of the person and whether the person poses a risk of harm to themselves or others.
