2026 World Cup: Houston’s NRG Stadium needs modifications

The ground will need to be widened to accommodate a regulation World Cup football pitch.

HOUSTON — On Tuesday, we got a glimpse of where things stand for the 2026 World Cup in Houston.

The city is hosting seven matches and we are now being told that some changes need to be made to the NRG Stadium, namely that the stadium ground has and needs to be widened to accommodate a regulation World Cup football pitch inside.

This is one of the updates provided by the Houston Host Committee. The World Cup also includes a supporters’ party and the committee’s plan is for it to take place in the east of the city centre.

“I can tell you right now we are very focused on EaDo, East Downtown,” World Cup Host Committee Chairman Chris Canetti said. “We have an exceptional plan to make EaDo a destination where locals and internationals can come together.”

Games start in June 2026. We have attended many fan parties at the George R. Brown Convention Center, including one from the Final Four.
