Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen attacked in the street in Copenhagen

The Danish Prime Minister was attacked in Copenhagen on Friday evening, her office said.

Mette Frederiksen was “beaten” by a man in the Kultorvet public square in the centre of the Danish capital, local media reports said.

The Prime Minister’s office said she was “shocked”. It is unclear whether she was injured in the attack.

Danish police arrested a suspect and confirmed the incident to local newspaper Jyllands-Posten, but made no further comment.

Mrs Frederiksen was recently active with her party in the election campaign for Sunday’s European elections.

The elections were marked by the rise of the extreme right.

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke signalled his support and called the attack “ugly and unacceptable”.

“Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked and beaten by a man today at the Kultorvet in Copenhagen,” he said.

“Mette is of course shocked by the attack. I have to say that it shocks all of us who are close to her.

“Something like this should not happen in our beautiful, safe and free country. We all have a responsibility to look after each other and the values on which our country is built. Police have arrested a man for the attack.”
