225 drivers across the state arrested for drunk driving over Memorial Day weekend – Finger Lakes Daily News

State police issued 10,949 tickets and arrested 225 people for drunk driving over Memorial Day weekend. The special enforcement period began on May 24 and lasted through May 27.

During the campaign, which was funded in part by the Governor’s Transportation Safety Committee, state police conducted alcohol checkpoints and extra drunk-driving patrols and issued tickets to inattentive drivers using handheld electronic devices.

Police arrested 225 people for drunk driving and investigated 239 accidents, including 58 involving personal injury. No fatal accidents were reported.

As part of the measures, officers also targeted speeders and aggressive drivers across the state. Below is a selection of the total tickets issued:

Speeding violations: 3,076

Distraction while driving: 356

Seat belt violations: 1,663

Law of Evasion: 106

During this raid, patrol officers used both marked state police vehicles and concealed identity traffic enforcement (CITE) vehicles to help identify drivers breaking the law. CITE vehicles help patrol officers better identify traffic violations. These vehicles blend in with everyday traffic, but are unmistakable as emergency vehicles when the hazard lights are on.

During last year’s Memorial Day weekend enforcement campaign, State Police issued a total of 13,471 tickets and arrested 219 people for drunk driving.
