Elderly woman killed after suspect steals vehicle, crashes into building near DC U.S. Attorney’s Office: Police

An elderly woman was killed when a suspect stole the vehicle she was riding in and then crashed it into a building in Washington, D.C., police said.

The car theft was reported Monday afternoon at Washington Hospital Center, police said. The elderly victim was in the passenger seat of the vehicle. The driver had gotten out upon arrival at the hospital when the suspect stole the vehicle, police said. The driver reported the vehicle stolen while his elderly parent was still inside, police said.

A short time later, a patrol officer observed the vehicle crash into a building at the corner of Sixth and D streets near the DCUS Attorney’s Office downtown, police said. The female suspect attempted to flee the scene but was caught by the officer and arrested, police said.

The elderly victim was found unconscious and taken to a nearby hospital in life-threatening condition, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Police determined that the vehicle was the one involved in the original car theft.

Police said they are currently consulting with the U.S. Attorney’s Office regarding charges.

The incident remains under investigation.

The names of the victims and the suspect in the car theft have not been released.

The Washington, DC Fire Department said in a statement that there was only superficial damage to the exterior of the building involved in the accident.
