SALT LAKE CITY — Weather forecasters in Salt Lake City have issued heat advisories for the Glen Canyon Recreation Area, as well as Lake Powell and Washington, Garfield and Kane counties in southern Utah and northern Arizona.

According to a National Weather Service warning issued Sunday, the area includes the cities of Hurricane, Ivins, St. George, Big Water, Bullfrog and surrounding areas.

Extreme heat is expected in southern Utah regions on Thursday and will continue through Friday evening, the warning said.

“Dangerously hot conditions possible with highs as high as 108 degrees Fahrenheit,” the National Weather Service said. “Nighttime temperatures will only rise to the mid-75 degrees Fahrenheit, limiting nighttime cooling from the heat.”

Meteorologists warned that heat illnesses can increase significantly during extreme heat events. Pets and young and elderly residents are particularly at risk.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, avoid the sun and check on relatives and neighbors,” the weather warning states. “Do not leave small children and pets unattended in vehicles. Deadly temperatures can be reached inside a car within minutes.”

Although the heat warning will be in effect from June 6 to 8, reservoirs in southern Utah continue to warm, meteorologists said in the news release.

“Water temperatures are still cold this early in the season,” the press release states. “Please use caution in cold water when recreational activities on area lakes.”
