Planned closure of I-635 begins due to work on Metropolitan Avenue Bridge

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (KCTV) – In Wyandotte County, work is progressing on the Metropolitan Avenue Bridge in KCK, resulting in weekend closures of both northbound and southbound lanes.

A project to rebuild the Metropolitan Avenue Bridge, which will completely replace guardrails, traffic signals and pedestrian crossings, began in February when the old bridge was demolished. Now KDOT is temporarily closing both directions of I-635 to relocate the bridge’s supports.

From Saturday, June 1st, 4am to Monday, June 3rd, 5am the following shops will be completely closed:

• I-635 northbound, Shawnee Drive to Swartz Road
• Southbound: I-635, K-32 (Kansas Avenue) to Shawnee Drive
• I-635 south to the Swartz Road exit
• I-635/Metropolitan Avenue Southbound on- and off-ramps
• I-635 north to the Metropolitan Avenue exit

Metropolitan Avenue itself is not closed. Detour signs and display boards inform drivers of the closure.
