Man from the center arrested after bank robbery and chase in Lufkin

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – On Wednesday afternoon, Lufkin police arrested 47-year-old Robert Harris of Center following a bank robbery and subsequent chase, according to a statement from the police department.

Harris was taken into custody at 1:46 p.m. on US 69 South.

According to police, the incident began at 1:10 p.m. when Harris entered the Cadence Bank on Brentwood Drive and handed a teller a note demanding money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, he fled on foot across Whitehouse Drive to the Belk Department Store parking lot, where he drove off in an older, green Toyota Tacoma, according to a witness.

According to police, officers spotted Harris’ vehicle on Casey Road at 1:27 p.m. and initiated a chase that went through the Fuller Springs area and onto U.S. 69 South. The chase, which reached speeds of up to 70 mph, ended near Garrison Drive after a Lufkin police officer performed a PIT maneuver and stopped Harris’ vehicle.

According to police, Harris was arrested without further incident. The stolen money was recovered. Officers noted that Harris was wearing an ankle bracelet at the time of his arrest.
