ROCHESTER, NY – A 51-year-old man who worked in a manhole cover has died after being struck by a motorist at a gas station on Lyell Avenue shortly before noon Saturday.

Rochester police said the driver of the car is cooperating with investigators and that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor at this time.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to the Exxon gas station on the corner of Lyell Avenue and Mount Read Boulevard after receiving a report of a person who had fallen.

According to police, a 45-year-old Rochester resident was driving into the parking lot when he struck the worker, who was obscured by the manhole cover.

Police said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified. The deceased man’s identity is being withheld until his family is notified.
