XL bully dog attack – current: Woman in Hornchurch killed by two dogs because neighbors were afraid for their children

Rishi Sunak explains why the XL Bully dog was added to the banned breeds under the Dangerous Dogs Act earlier this year

A woman killed by her XL bully dogs in her east London home is known locally as Angeline Mahal.

Ms Mahal, believed to be in her 50s, was attacked by her two dogs in the semi-detached house in Cornwall Close, Hornchurch, shortly after 1pm on Monday.

Armed police were at the scene and urged neighbors on the cul-de-sac to stay indoors before the area was evacuated shortly after 4 p.m.

Although the London Ambulance Service sent paramedics and a helicopter, the woman’s death was pronounced at the scene.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ms Mahal was named at the scene as His Majesty’s Coroners in East London confirmed they had been informed of her death.

Both dogs were exempt from the state’s ban on XL bully dogs that went into effect on February 1.

To exempt a dog from the tax exemption, owners must have their animal neutered, microchipped, and muzzled and on a leash in public.

But a neighbor, Sejal Solanki, said she warned her child not to approach the dogs.

She said: “I said, ‘Don’t ever touch those dogs.’ They are dangerous’.”

Charities argue bans will not prevent dog attacks

Animal rights groups argue that breed bans are not working and other measures are needed to prevent fatal dog attacks.

“We were saddened to hear of yesterday’s incident and our thoughts are with the family of the late lady,” a Dogs Trust spokesman said.

“Dogs Trust has called on the Government to review the Dangerous Dogs Act as it is ineffective and does little to protect the public. We urgently need effective legislation that allows for early intervention, with a focus on preventing dog bites in all types of dogs

They added that better supervision of puppy breeding and sales is needed, as well as mandatory licensing for dog sales.

400 XL bullies killed since ban

Figures show that 400 XL bully dogs have been euthanized since the breed was banned.

A Freedom of Information request shows 400 claims have been made for the euthanasia of XL Bully dogs in England and Wales since the ban on February 1.

A total of £76,500 was donated paid to owners who decided to have their pets euthanized.

The figures also show that 57,277 exemption certificates have been issued to owners who wish to keep their pet on condition that it is neutered, microchipped and muzzled and on a leash in public.

The data shows that previous estimates of the number of XL bullies in the UK were underestimated. According to government figures, there were probably 10,000, but earlier this year the number rose to around 50,000.

Neighbors tell of horror as their son watches their mother administer first aid after a dog attack

A neighbor told MailOnline the sons were seen outside the house as emergency workers battled to save Mahal’s life. The unnamed neighbor said: “The paramedics were working on her in the driveway by the front door.

“One of the sons was crying but you could see they were both devastated. The woman lives alone with the dogs, but her sons regularly come and visit her.

“I have never seen the dogs being walked. I didn’t really see them in the garden either. I hear them quite often in the house, sometimes they bark at night. The deceased woman had been renting the house for around two to three years.”

The family begged their mother to get rid of the XL bullies

A relative who wished to remain anonymous feared that Angeline – known to friends as Angel – had been dead for many hours before she was discovered.

He said The sun: “We miss her, she was sincere and loved by everyone.

“We asked them to give the dogs away. The bond between owners and dogs is too strong.”

He said: “She had two dogs when they were puppies. You have been registered. It was more likely that one of them had attacked her.

“We are just shocked. You hear about these attacks in a newspaper, but you never imagined it would happen to your own family.”

He added: “I want to make one thing clear: anyone who has an XL bully dog needs to do the right thing when they notice their pet becoming aggressive and give it up.”

“I know it’s hard because people have such a bond – but we don’t want any other family to have to go through this. We miss Angeline. She was a genuine person with such a kind heart.”

“It was strange because there was no sound”

While some people living nearby reported hearing barking during the incident, others heard nothing.

A man who was working on a house a few doors away from the victim’s home told The Sun he only found out about it when armed police showed up.

He said: “The armed forces were here immediately. We thought it was a stabbing or a shooting or something like that.

“We saw someone being pulled out of the house on a bed to perform CPR. I couldn’t see her because there were too many people around her.

“It was strange because there was no sound… That’s the strange thing about it.”
