ISTANBUL

Google Maps has introduced a “speed trap alert” feature in the country that allows users to identify speed cameras on the roads. A lawyer said the measure was “legal.”

The Google Maps feature, which has been used in other countries for years, allows users to add broken-down cars, closed lanes, construction sites and traffic disruptions to the map, as well as displaying speed cameras along their route.

Taha Yasin Caner explained that there has been a sharp increase in traffic fines in recent years, most of which are due to radar devices used as part of speed enforcement regulations. He added that some drivers therefore use radar detectors to avoid traffic fines.

Caner pointed out that the use of Google Maps’ speed trap feature is different from the use of radar detectors in this sense, stressing that the use, manufacture and import of such devices are restricted by law.

Caner pointed out that users use the Google Maps application through their phones or tablets and not other devices that can be considered radar detectors, saying: “Drivers can use Google Maps radar alert or other radar alert programs without facing any legal restrictions or penalties.”

“The Highway Code does not contain any provisions on this matter. In accordance with the principle of legality, the administrative penalty should be included in the legislation and it should be made clear that the administration has the power to apply it,” he concluded.
