Former Boston police officer must pay back money in overtime settlement

BOSTON (WWLP) – A former Boston police officer has been convicted in connection with an overtime fraud scheme.

Michael Murphy of Hyde Park pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit theft in connection with programs receiving federal funds and one count of embezzlement of funds from an agency receiving federal funds. He was sentenced to two years’ probation. Murphy was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and $16,014 in restitution.

Murphy was convicted of overtime he failed to work in evidence storage between September 2016 and February 2019. So far, 15 Boston police officers have been charged with overtime fraud, and Murphy is the sixth to be convicted so far.
