Man allegedly kidnapped and sexually assaulted woman near a bar in North Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A man is behind bars after allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman at a North Myrtle Beach bar over the weekend.

According to records, Douglas Steadman, 49, of Lexington, North Carolina, was arrested Sunday and charged with kidnapping and first-degree sexual abuse. WMBF News obtained copies of a police report and warrants for Steadman’s arrest on Tuesday.

The police report states that an officer with the North Myrtle Beach Police Department was called to the Sky Bar on Main Street around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. The officer wrote that he saw a crowd of people shielding a woman wrapped in a towel. The documents say the woman “appeared extremely emotional and stated she had just been sexually assaulted.”

The officer reportedly drove the woman to a hospital, where he found the woman had injuries to her mouth and blood on both hands. The woman also said she was missing her clothes, shoes, phone, debit card and driver’s license.

After arriving at the hospital, the woman told police she was alone in the bar and had a few drinks. Then she said a man, later identified as Steadman, approached her on the dance floor and “told her she was too drunk and that the business was going to kick her out.”

The report says Steadman then led the woman down the stairs into an area she described only as dark.

The arrest warrants state that Steadman allegedly “voluntarily and coercively engaged in unwanted oral and vaginal intercourse on three occasions within a period of 20 to 25 minutes.”

In the police report, the woman mentioned how Steadman put his fingers in her mouth and that she told Steadman “no” several times. She also told police that he resisted and covered her mouth and nose with his hands. Because of this, the woman said, it was difficult to free herself and she could not breathe – and she may have passed out at some point during the attack.

After Steadman left for a third time, the woman managed to crawl to a place where people could see her and help her.

Police later obtained camera footage from the bar showing both the woman and Steadman inside and the two of them leaving together.

When officers spoke to Steadman, he claimed he helped the woman leave as security was about to kick her out. He also said after he took the woman downstairs, they were approached by two other men and he left after an argument. Police noted that Steadman could not provide a description of the men.

Police also reportedly spoke with a person who was at the bar with Steadman. That person stated they weren’t aware of a specific time period he was in. Officers said the time period was consistent with the alleged sexual assault.

After Steadman was taken to jail, police also noticed blood on his shirt. According to the documents, Steadman told officers he did not know how the blood got there.

As of Tuesday, records show Steadman is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center and no bail has been set.
