Macon family remembers grandson killed in gas station shooting

RaQuavian Smith, 23, was shot at the Marathon gas station on Napier Avenue

MACON, Ga. – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting Saturday night at the Marathon gas station on Napier Avenue.

RaQuavian Smith, 23, was shot as he left the store. His grandmother, Cathy Smith, says he has turned his life around.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Smith said.

Smith says doctors told her RaQuavian was shot twice in the head. RaQuavian had three young boys and worked at Goodwill on Zebulon Road. She says she raised him since middle school and he was always funny.

“When we were with me, we played around,” Smith said. “It was fun to be with my grandson. I loved him, I loved him very much. I’m going to miss him very much, too.”

Smith says investigators have not said much about who shot RaQuavian.

“We don’t know what happened,” she said. “We haven’t seen any video of anything, so I can’t say what really happened because I don’t know.”

Gregory Wilcox lives in the West Macon area. She says no one should lose their life so young and hopes churches can help people who go down the wrong path.

“It makes me sad,” Wilcox said. “It really makes me sad. We need more leaders in this world who make a difference.”

Smith hopes investigators will find the man responsible for shooting her grandson.

“I just hope they find out what happened, what really happened and who did this to him,” Smith said.

Smith said RaQuavian was out with his cousin at the time of the shooting. She says he is not speaking to anyone because the situation is so disturbing.
