Unions suspend strike; SSNIT given one month to address concerns

The Organised Labour Union has announced the suspension of its strike, which came into effect today, Monday, July 15, in protest at the efforts of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to divest 60% of its shares in four hotels to a private company owned by Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

The decision was announced today at a press conference by the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, following an emergency meeting on Monday 15 July.

The Ghana Medical Association confirmed the suspension of the strike in a statement released on Monday.

A statement signed by GMA President and Secretary General Dr Frank Serebour and Dr Richard Selormey said: “In light of this decision, NEC suspends the previously published plan for industrial action with immediate effect and instructs all members to return to their posts. NEC is grateful to members for their support.”

Before the strike was suspended today, some union members had already begun to implement the order by leaving their offices.

There was a standstill in some courts in Accra. In some government offices in Accra, many employees had left their offices.

At the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, for example, The ambulance service has been discontinued Many patients get stuck.

With the unions’ new decision, the situation is expected to return to normal.
