Houston Hometown Hero Trae Tha Truth Brings Hurricane Relief to Neighbors in Need

HOUSTON – When things get tough, the rescue team steps up.

The Relief Gang, created by rapper Trae Tha Truth, is a way for Houstonians to help each other in times of need. An offshoot of Trae’s nonprofit, Angel By Nature, the Relief Gang is made up of volunteers who go where their neighbors need them most.

When Hurricane Beryl hit Houston on Monday, July 8, the rescue team mobilized. Trae and a team were on the ground as Hurricane Beryl slammed into the city. “We started doing water rescues,” Trae said. After the hurricane, the rescue team will continue to be present in Houston.

“We decided to make our own rules. When they need help, we go right out there. You have to think about people without power, people on dialysis, different machines. Guess what? You have to try to be there. They don’t want to hear, ‘Hey, wait a week or two, let us plan, strategize.’ They might not be alive by then, you know?” Trae said.

Trae said a lot of people are excited to be a part of the Relief Gang: “Believe it or not, man, I get a lot of people from all over the world saying, ‘When you go out, I need to go out with you… It’s the blessing of making it cool to give back,’” Trae said.

Houston Life’s Melanie Camp joined Trae and the Relief Gang in the Houston suburb of Southpark as they helped a couple in their 70s remove a tree that had fallen on their home.
