According to the prosecution, which examined 24 witnesses, the survivor’s father died of drug abuse while the mother died soon after. She had been living in a home on Katol Road since she was nine years old. On the morning of April 20, 2017, she and four other minors escaped from the home. The group sought shelter near a shop in Sitabuldi that night. The next morning, her companions left the shelter, leaving the survivor alone in Sitabuldi. On April 21, at around 10 p.m., four of the accused – Firoz Ahmed Jamil Ahmed (40), Mayur Ramesh Barsagade (23), Baba alias Atul alias Naresh Janbandhu (22) and Chintya alias Swapnil Dev Anand Jawade (27) – noticed the 16-year-old sitting on a footpath near a shopping mall adjacent to Sitabuldi police station, crying due to hunger. They allegedly promised her food and made her board an autorickshaw. The accused took her to Khamla, where the four men took turns to rape her throughout the night. The next day, the three other accused took her to an under-construction apartment in Sugat Nagar in Jaripatka, where they forcibly joined her before leaving her in Sitabuldi, the prosecution said. The next morning, a traffic policeman on duty noticed the survivor in Sitabuldi. On learning about her ordeal, the policeman took her to Sitabuldi police station. The senior officers provided food to the survivor before sending her for a medical examination. A dedicated team led by the DCP started searching for the culprits. The girl recognized Firoz when the policemen took her to his shoe shop. The policemen nabbed Firoz and his employee Mayur.
