July 4th shooting under investigation; victim shot in lower back

CASPER, Wyoming – A shooting in north Casper on the night of July 4 last week remains under investigation, Casper police officials said Monday, July 8.

The victim is an adult male who was shot in the hip or lower back area, according to CPD spokeswoman Amber Freestone. Officers responded to the reported shooting at the East M Street basketball courts on July 4 at 10:12 p.m.

Hundreds of people were in the area, Freestone said.

Officers followed a trail of blood to the victim, who was conscious and immediately treated and taken to the hospital. “He did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries,” Freestone said.

The witnesses’ statements unanimously indicated that there had been an altercation between the victim and a small group, which apparently involved the use of fireworks, which are prohibited in the district and the city.

Freestone said officers were inundated with fireworks-related calls at the time, and several violations were observed at the scene.

Multiple interviews took place at the scene and at the Palace of Justice. Anyone with information is asked to contact CPD at (307) 235-8278.
