The deceased was identified as Hemanth Kumar, a resident of Byatarayanapura on Mysuru Road, who was returning home on Friday night when the incident occurred around 10.15 pm. He struggled to maintain his balance and collided with the median, reported The Times of India. His motorcycle veered off to the left side of the road and Kumar himself fell into a drain near Jnanabharathi metro station.

A district fire officer and his team discovered Kumar’s body floating in the drain on Sunday morning. Another senior official from the Fire and Rescue Department also spoke to reporters and noted that the accident site was overgrown with bushes and garbage and the drain was about three metres deep. “Usually the body floats to the surface after 24 hours, so we went near the accident site on Sunday morning and found his body,” the official told the publication.

Kumar’s body was discovered 20 metres from the accident site, buried in the sediment, a police official leading the investigation said, according to another report. Despite an initial search stretching for 2 kilometres along the drain from the accident site, rescue teams had found no trace.

Following a missing person report, the Jnanabharathi police were actively engaged in the search operation for over 30 hours. After the discovery of Kumar’s body, the Jnanabharathi traffic police are preparing to register a case against him for reckless and negligent driving, the report said.

“It may also have been negligence on the part of the city authorities. The gap between the guardrails could have been covered,” an official said, according to the publication.

Kumar’s body was handed over for autopsy and then handed over to his family. He leaves behind his parents and a brother, the report added.
