Sources: Most wanted terrorist from Lashkar is behind series of attacks in Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi:

According to security sources, a Pakistan-based official of the resistance front affiliate of Lashkar-e-Toiba is behind the recent surge in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

Saifullah Sajid Jatt, who hails from Shangamanga village in Kasur district of Pakistan’s Punjab, is a “hardcore terrorist” according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and has a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head.

Jatt operates from a base camp in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, they said. His wife is of Indian origin and lives with him, they added. He had previously worked in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and was currently handling Lashkar recruitment and helping terrorists cross into India, the sources said.

Sajid Jatt is considered to be the operational commander of Lashkar and also handles terror funding. He is on the NIA’s wanted list. Security agencies suspect that he has a contact named Qasim in Jammu and Kashmir and are currently searching for him. They suspect that Jatt is behind several terror attacks in the valley in recent years.

The union territory has been the scene of a series of terror attacks in recent months. Last month, terrorists opened fire on a bus carrying pilgrims. The bus plunged into a ravine in Reasi district, killing nine people.

A few days after the Reasi incident, two armed terrorists entered a village and opened fire. Villagers informed the authorities and security forces arrived. In the ensuing gunfight, a CRPF soldier was killed and the terrorists were shot dead.

In the last two days, five terrorists were killed in separate clashes in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district. Two soldiers, including a paratrooper, were also killed in the clashes. The attack came at a time when the Amarnath Yatra is taking place.
