Shooting at birthday party in Kentucky: Four dead, three injured in tragic incident

Four people were killed and three others injured in a mass shooting at a home on Saturday. People had been celebrating a birthday party at the home in northern Kentucky when the shooting occurred, CNN reported, citing police.

According to a CNN report, officers found seven victims with gunshot wounds shortly before 3 a.m. local time after receiving calls about an active shooter at a home on Ridgecrest Drive in Florence, according to Florence Police Chief Jeff Mallery.

Jeff Mallery identified the four shooting victims as Hayden Rybicki, 20, Delaney Eary, 19, and Melissa Parrett, 44, and Shane Miller, 20. He said homeowner Parrett was hosting her son’s 21st birthday party when the shooting occurred.

Police identified Chase Garvey (21) as the suspect. According to police, Garvey was not invited to the party. However, he was known to those present. According to police, three of the victims were taken to a Cincinnati hospital and were in critical but stable condition.

Garvey initially fled the scene and was discovered a short time later in a crashed vehicle with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police, CNN reported. Police said Garvey was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities say the shooter’s motive is unclear and Garvey acted alone.

Mallery said, “We’ve never seen anything like this before. I know it’s like this all over the country, but Florence was the first time we’ve had a mass shooting. So this whole thing is very emotional.” Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public and an investigation is underway, according to a CNN report.

The shooting is the 277th mass shooting in the U.S. in 2024, CNN cited data from the Gun Violence Archive. The archive considers a mass shooting to be one in which four or more people are shot, not counting the shooter.
