Two teenagers die in a drowning in New York in the waters off Coney Island in Brooklyn

Two teenagers drowned off Coney Island Friday night after running back into the ocean following a brief downpour, according to a police report.

The two girls, ages 17 and 18, disappeared from the water near Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn around 8:10 p.m. and were found on the shore at 9:15 p.m., police said.

Both victims were taken to Coney Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, the NYPD said.

The police initially received information about a 24-year-old man who was also missing in the water, but this report later turned out to be unfounded.

Witnesses told ABC 7 that most people sought shelter on the beach when it started to rain.

But the teenagers eventually jumped back into the water, even though a man tried to stop them.

It’s unclear if the man knew them, but he couldn’t swim and no one else could help the girls because the water was so rough, ABC 7 reported.

According to the city’s parks department, lifeguards are on duty at Coney Island between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Swimming is not permitted outside of these times and in closed beach areas.

The tragic deaths occurred a week after two teenagers were washed away from Jacob Riis Park in the Rockaways, Queens, and later found dead.

The two young victims were identified as 16-year-old Elyjha Chandler and his friend, 17-year-old Christian Perkins.

Last summer, according to reports at the time, a 15-year-old was found dead in the water off Coney Island just days after he disappeared.

His 14-year-old brother was rescued during the scary scene.
