Houston restaurants that opened, closed and stayed in business over the past decade – Houston Public Media

It used to be that Houstonians had to head out of town to Central Texas for top-tier artisanal barbecue. But over the past decade, places like Killen’s BBQ—and many others since—have changed that.

Ten years ago we had a group of local food writers on Houston counts to discuss what our city’s culinary specialty could be. Eric Sandler, David Leftwichand Katharine Shilcutt finished making their on-air pitches for dishes like fajitas, barbecue and Vietnamese-Cajun fusion, and they hung out in the lobby for a while talking about restaurants they’d been to recently and who in Houston’s culinary scene was doing interesting things.

Overhearing their conversation, we realized that we could probably just place a microphone in the middle of them and it would make for a compelling recurring segment on the show.

And that’s how The complete menu was born our monthly conversation with local food writers about where and what to eat in our city’s incredible culinary scene.

The interior of the State of Grace restaurant in Houston
Over the past decade, places like State of Grace have charted new territory for what fine dining in Houston could look like, in terms of decor and cuisine.

In this month’s episode, we celebrate the segment’s tenth anniversary by bringing back Shilcutt. At the time, she worked for Houstonia Magazine, but has since left the world of food writing to work for Rice University.

In the audio above, she joins our food writing group, which includes two original members—Sandler of CultureMap Houston and Leftwich of Edible Houston and Houston Food Finder, and most recently Felice Sloan of the lifestyle blog Swanky Maven—as they reflect on the past decade of dining and food in Greater Houston.
