Seattle Mariners catcher throws wild jab at Houston Astros and fans will love it

Cal Raleigh had an RBI late in the game Friday night as the Seattle Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 at T-Mobile Park, but his late-game interview could have been just as special.

Speaking with ROOT Sports after the game, Raleigh was informed that the Mariners moved up a game in the American League West standings due to losses to the Houston Astros (5.5 games back) and Texas Rangers (9.0 games back), and he wryly uttered a line that every Mariners fan will love:

“It’s always good when the Astros lose, right?”

While most people in baseball dislike the Astros due to the 2017 sign-stealing scandal, Mariners fans have a different type of distaste for Houston that makes this comment hit home. The Astros have been in the ACLS or better for seven straight seasons and Mariners fans are tired of being used as the Astros’ springboard to the playoffs. This season, the Mariners are 5-2 against the Astros and have found a way to play a good game against them. They will have to continue this momentum because they still have six games to face with Houston.

It remains to be seen whether the Astros will use Raleigh’s comments as motivation heading into these matchups.

Raleigh is only hitting .201 this season, but he still finds a way to create decisive moments. Even though this one didn’t leave the stadium, it speaks to the need to put the ball in play and see what happens.

The Mariners will face the Twins again Saturday night at 7:10 p.m. PT.
