Hottest week of the year, afternoon storms return

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – We’re giving you FIRST WARNING of the hottest weather yet this year, along with the possibility of a few storms each day.

TODAY

It’s going to be hot today! Temperatures on the beaches will rise to below 35 degrees, and inland they will reach up to 35 degrees.

Here we go. The heat index will rise to 40 °C.

When you factor in the humidity, the heat index will reach nearly 40°C in many places today, making it feel brutal outside for any length of time. If you plan on being outside today, please drink water and take frequent breaks.

An approaching cold front will be responsible for the afternoon thunderstorm chances. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will arrive in the afternoon and continue into the evening hours. If you find yourself in a thunderstorm, consider yourself lucky! Not only will you get some much-needed rain, but you’ll also get a break from the heat! The thunderstorms will likely stay with us into the evening hours.

There will be isolated showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, which will probably last into the evening.

We have a Level 1 severe weather risk today. As always with high heat and humidity, a strong storm cannot be ruled out. The main dangers would be frequent lightning, heavy rain and small hail with any strong storm. Most storms today should remain well below severe weather levels.

There is a LEVEL 1 risk for one or two strong storms today. Although storms are expected, there is a risk...
There is a LEVEL 1 risk for one or two strong storms today. Although storms are expected, the risk for severe weather remains low. We need to keep an eye out for a strong thunderstorm with frequent lightning, heavy rain and small hail.(WMBF)

A hot week is ahead

I wish I could tell you that the relief from the cold front would bring lower humidity, but it’s June.

There’s no real break from the heat this week, with dangerous heat expected through Friday. The heat index will be triple digits every day this week, but we want to highlight Wednesday and Thursday, when the feels like temperatures may return to the 105° mark.

Here comes the sultry heat and the hottest week of the year!

It is important to know that at 40°C, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can happen quite easily. Again, please limit the time you spend outside, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks if you must be outside.

DAILY STORM PROBABILITY

In addition to the humidity, there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms every day this week. Unfortunately, we are not expecting any rain to end the drought. There is still a chance of a scattered shower/thunderstorm on Tuesday and Wednesday before more thunderstorms arrive on Thursday and Friday.

We're maintaining daily storm probabilities this week, with the best chances today and Thursday.

Ultimately, some areas will get a fair amount of rain. Others will get fairly moderate rain. That’s pretty typical for this time of year. Regardless, your area will get rain at some point this week. Hopefully a few times if you’re lucky.

The good news? It's likely to rain at some point this week. The bad news? Probably not...
The good news? It’s likely to rain sometime this week. The bad news? It’s not likely to end the drought we’re currently experiencing. A few inches of rain wouldn’t hurt us.(WMBF)
