IG suspends special campaign, warns against political interference

The Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has suspended special promotions within the police force with immediate effect.

The police chief announced this while honouring newly promoted senior police officers in Abuja on Friday.

He condemned some officials who pushed for special promotions and pointed out that from now on, anyone recommended by politicians and influential people in society would be subject to disciplinary action.

Egbetokun also said that the police command would arrange for the special promotion of an officer if necessary.

He also banned unjustified advertising on posts and warned that anyone found guilty of this act would be prosecuted for compliance with the armed forces’ laws.

Following the warning, the police chief awarded 15 senior police officers who had recently been promoted from their original rank to a new rank.

The new appointments include one Deputy Inspector General of Police, eleven Deputy Inspectors General of Police and 15 Police Commissioners.

Egbetokun advised the newly promoted officers to live up to expectations and set good examples for their non-commissioned officers.
