POLICE: East Texas inmate re-arrested after attacking police officers and escaping from Tyler hospital custody

TATUM, Texas – An East Texas inmate has been rearrested after police say he attacked an officer and escaped from custody.

According to Tatum Police, on Sunday, June 10, a patrol officer was called to a business on North Hill Street for an assault.

When officers arrived on the scene, they arrested Anthony Jefferson for robbery and assault after allegedly robbing a victim and taking an undisclosed amount of money. Jefferson was subsequently booked into the Rusk County Jail.

According to TPD, the officer was then ordered to transport Jefferson to a Tyler hospital for medical treatment unrelated to his arrest or detention.

Police say Jefferson attacked the officer and attempted to take the gun from him after he was checked by medical personnel. TPD says officers were able to retain the gun but were knocked to the ground by Jefferson, who ran into the parking lot and then into the street.

The officer and a Texas Department of Public Safety patrol officer were able to arrest Jefferson and take him back into custody.

Jefferson was again taken to the Rusk County Jail and charged with the following:

robbery
Bodily harm by attack
Attack on peace officer
Escape during arrest

His bail has not yet been set.
