Fatal accident involving a UTV semi-trailer in Fort Fairfield

FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine (WAGM) – On Thursday, June 6, 2024, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Fort Fairfield Emergency Services were notified of a motor vehicle accident on Presque Isle Street in the area of ​​McShea Siding.

When investigating officers arrived on scene, they found that Robert Chambers, 63, of Fort Fairfield, was traveling southbound on Presque Isle St. (US Route 1A), in an area where the local ATV trail uses the public right of way to connect ATV trails, when Chambers abruptly turned off the shoulder onto the roadway and attempted to cross the road to access the ATV trail. As Chambers did so, his 2021 Can-Am UTV was struck by a loaded 2007 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Camille Aub-Roy, 21, of St-Anne-De-Madawaska, New Brunswick, who was also traveling southbound.

Chambers was thrown from the UTV and pronounced dead at the scene, Aub-Roy was uninjured in the incident.

An accident reconstructionist was called to the scene along with the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit. Chambers was not wearing a helmet or seat belt at the time of the accident, but Aub-Roy was wearing a seat belt.

Fort Fairfield Police were assisted by the Fort Fairfield Fire Department, Maine State Police, Presque Isle Police, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Department of Transportation.

Route 1A was closed for approximately three hours while the accident scene was investigated.
