More than 100 protesters after alleged racist attack

Protesters gathered after three people were allegedly racially abused and attacked.

More than 100 people took part in the anti-racism demonstration in High Street in Erdington, Birmingham on Saturday.

The event took place near the scene of an alleged parking dispute on May 17 in which a man, a woman and a teenager were “run over,” police said.

Five men aged between 22 and 45 were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and racially motivated assault and have since been released on bail.

In an interview with BBC Midlands Today during the protest, Bishop Dr Desmond Jaddoo said the protests were “totally unacceptable” and added that enough was enough.

He also called for a civil rights law to protect black people.

“This is not about playing the racism card. Racist discrimination against members of our community is a reality and we must now ensure that it ends,” he said.

A West Midlands Police spokesman had previously said four of the men had been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and racially motivated assault.

The fifth man, 45 years old, was arrested on suspicion of racially motivated assault.

Officers confirmed they were reviewing CCTV footage to establish the nature of the disturbance and who was involved, and appealed for witnesses to come forward.
