Bear enters house in Gunma and attacks elderly couple

Early Friday morning, a bear entered a house in Gunma Prefecture and seriously injured an elderly couple.

A woman in her 70s from the town of Annaka called emergency services about 20 minutes after midnight to report that a bear had entered her house and bitten her husband, police said.

The couple were sleeping on the first floor of a two-story house when the man, also in his 70s, heard a noise outside and opened a window to investigate. The bear, about a meter long, attacked the couple but immediately disappeared from the scene.

The husband suffered cuts to his head, while the wife suffered a broken arm. Neither of them is in critical condition and their recovery is expected in about three months.

Her son, who was on the second floor at the time, suffered no injuries.
