Pro-Palestinian student protests | 6 pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at UNC-CH to appear in court

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) – Six pro-Palestinian protesters arrested at UNC-Chapel Hill face serious charges and are expected in court Thursday morning.

The hearings begin at 9 a.m. at the Orange County Courthouse.

These arrests occurred on April 30 in the courtyard of the UNC campus when police intervened to break up a pro-Palestinian protest and encampment.

The university said protesters, who had been there for days, began violating university rules. They were asked to leave the hall and received several warnings.

Three of the six arrested protesters attend UNC.

A total of 36 of the protesters were arrested and 30 of them were cited for trespassing and released on the spot. Ten of them were students at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Emi Abe-teh, Stephen Sandor, Gurnoor Majhail and Tashia Ethridge were arrested and charged with resisting law enforcement, obstructing and delaying prosecution and trespassing. Jackson Prause and Owen Stone face the same charges as well as assaulting a police officer.

“To be honest, they were accused of more serious offenses. So they were brought before the justice of the peace, but then released when they got to the justice of the peace, and those who were accused of less serious offenses were summoned,” said Orange County District Attorney Jeff Nieman.

Further investigation revealed that investigators accused Stone of hitting a North Carolina State Police officer with a drum as he assisted in the arrest Tuesday morning.

The ABC11 I-Team has obtained UNC Chapel Hill’s Dean’s List records for Abe-teh, Sandor and Prause.

Majhail and Ethridge are both listed online as students at Duke University.
