Man killed in New Castle scooter crash identified – First state update

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal electric scooter crash that occurred Sunday evening in New Castle that left one man dead.

According to officials, on May 26, 2024, at approximately 8:46 p.m., a 2015 Honda Accord was traveling north on New Castle Avenue in the left-turn lane at the intersection with Memorial Drive. At the same time, a Tifgalop K-8 electric scooter was traveling south on New Castle Avenue approaching the intersection with Memorial Drive.

Authorities said it was dark at the time of the accident and the scooter did not have adequate lighting. The driver of the Honda could not see the scooter approaching the intersection as it attempted to turn left onto Memorial Drive. As a result, the front of the scooter struck the right side of the Honda in the intersection.

The driver of the scooter, identified as Zunwei Shao, 37, was not wearing a protective helmet or reflective clothing. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Honda, a 50-year-old woman from Wilmington, was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

The road was closed for about three hours while the accident scene was being investigated and cleared.
