Pubs in Pune seem deserted after Porsche incident. Founder shares videos

Once the hub of bustling parties and fancy brunches, Pune’s pubs and clubs have seemed deserted since the Porsche incident, in which a 17-year-old drunkenly mowed down two software engineers. The incident, which sparked massive outrage online, is directly responsible for clubs and pubs in the Maharashtra city becoming more cautious about following the law.

Pune-based entrepreneur and fitness influencer Chirag Barjatya shared a video of various pubs in the city looking empty after the Porsche incident. Barjatya said that the target audience of these establishments – high school and college students – are no longer allowed entry.

In Maharashtra, the legal drinking age is 25. However, this law was rarely enforced until the Porsche case, in which the minor responsible for the deaths of two software engineers was filmed drinking in a pub before the accident. The 17-year-old reportedly spent Rs 48,000 in the pub before getting behind the wheel of his luxury car and ploughing into two people who lost their lives in the accident.

“Clubs in Pune are empty. The people who used to party the most (high school and college students) are not even allowed in. Clubs no longer serve alcohol except near the bar. Even people aged 40-50 have to show their ID to enter,” Barjatya, founder of PFC Club, wrote on X.

He then showed two videos of different pubs that appeared deserted. Barjatya said that it had previously been difficult to gain access to these establishments.



Several people confirmed in the comments section that pubs in Pune have become stricter about who can get in. More than one person said that a famous club in the city is denying entry to anyone below the age of 25.

Many were happy with the change, but some were more cynical and said that after a few weeks everything would be back to “normal”.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the minor driver of the Porsche was of sound mind when the accident occurred on May 19.

“He (the minor defendant) was of sound mind. It was not that everyone was so drunk that they didn’t understand anything. They were fully aware that because of their conduct, a Section 304-like incident could happen,” he said.

The teenager was placed in an observation home until June 5 and his father, a well-known construction worker, was arrested.
