Suspect found dead and wanted for murder of Ohio police officer

A gunman suspected of killing a police officer in Ohio is dead.

Authorities say officers found 24-year-old Deshawn Vaughn dead in a home in Shaker Heights on Sunday, according to CBS affiliate WOIO in Cleveland.

He is accused of attacking Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin on Saturday evening.

“The suspect was highly armed,” U.S. Marshals Peter J. Elliott said at a news conference Sunday. “We know he had a very violent past. So we can announce that the person has passed away.”

News Center 7 previously reported that officers were called to the 300 block of East 211th Street for a disturbance just before 10 p.m. Saturday evening when a suspect ambushed an officer and shot him.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office identified Derbin as the officer.

Paramedics transported him to University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Derbin was in his first year with the Euclid Police Department.

“There is no respect for law enforcement anymore,” Elliott said. “But I will tell you something: We will continue to stand united. There is no respect for law enforcement. It has to change.”

Police found Vaughn at a home in Shaker Heights on Sunday afternoon and a SWAT team was called, WOIO said.

Neighbors were under a shelter in the area of ​​Lee Road and Chagin Boulevard.

It is unclear whether police shot Vaughn or whether he took his own life.

Ohio BCI is investigating this incident.
