Man charged with drug possession after fleeing police in Crystal Lake – Shaw Local

After allegedly fleeing police on Randall Road in Crystal Lake on Tuesday afternoon, a Chicago man was arrested and charged with possession of hundreds of grams of fentanyl and cocaine.

Carlos J. Cartagena, 33, is charged with possession with the intent to deliver more than 900 grams each of cocaine and fentanyl, class felonies

He is also charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer, which is an aggravated charge for allegedly speeding in excess of 21 miles per hour and failure to obey multiple traffic control devices; reckless driving; and in possession of six Clonazepam tablets, according to the complaint.

Cartagena is accused of ignoring a McHenry County sheriff’s deputy’s signals to stop and stop and driving through traffic lights at more than 21 miles per hour over the speed limit, the complaint says.

Police ended the pursuit and found Cartagena and his vehicle minutes later in the parking lot of a restaurant in Algonquin, said Assistant District Attorney Julio Cantre.

After a hearing on Wednesday, Chief Judge Michael Chmiel said he believed Cartagena posed a real and present threat to any person or the community and was a flight risk and ordered him remanded in custody.

He is due back in court on May 14.
