A shocking number of Japanese women say they have been sexually harassed at work

29 percent of working women in Japan said they had experienced harassment in their workplace, from inappropriate touching to comments about a woman’s age or appearance to coercion for sex.

The latest data comes from a Japanese Labor Ministry survey of 9,700 working women aged 25 to 44, the reported Wall Street Journal. The findings that about three in 10 working women have struggled with harassment show the ongoing problems women face in the workplace as the country tries to encourage more companies to hire and promote women.

The most common forms of harassment were inappropriate comments about a woman’s appearance, age, or physical characteristics. Nearly 17% said they had been asked or invited into a sexual relationship, and another 20% said they had been harassed after revealing their pregnancy.

Currently, there is a higher percentage of working women in Japan than in the United States or Europe. However, these jobs tend to be low-end or temporary positions, and Japanese women are far less likely to hold leadership positions than in the United States or Europe. The Japanese government has taken steps to change this by requiring large companies to set strict targets for the proportion of women hired and those promoted to leadership positions.
