Man and teenager from Gainesville allegedly raped drunk woman at birthday party

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – 27-year-old Calvin Dewayne Bradley and a 16-year-old boy were arrested early yesterday morning and charged with sexual abuse of the same victim by more than one person, a charge that carries a higher penalty.

The victim was at a birthday party on July 24 (Bradley’s 27th birthday) and drank “excessive amounts of alcohol,” according to the police report. She told a Gainesville Police Department officer that she remembered vomiting off the balcony and waking up on the couch. She said Bradley raped her while she repeatedly told him to stop, and after Bradley briefly stopped when he heard someone coming from another room, both Bradley and the underage boy later returned to her and raped both of them; she said all of the sexual acts were unwanted.

When the victim woke up the next morning, she was reportedly distressed and told several witnesses about the sexual abuse before going to the UF Health Shands emergency room to fill out a rape kit.

After being granted Miranda, both defendants reportedly admitted that they had sex with the victim and that they knew she was heavily intoxicated but continued to have sex with her anyway. Both reportedly claimed that the sex was consensual and repeatedly stated that the victim had consumed large amounts of alcohol.

Bradley was sentenced for juvenile offences between 2011 and 2014 and had one conviction for a non-violent crime. Several drug and weapons charges brought against him between 2017 and 2022, including discharging a firearm outdoors in an apartment complex, were later dropped. Judge Kristine Van Vorst ordered him held without bail.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are from the arrest report and/or court records and are merely allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
