At least 4 people killed, 9 others injured in shooting at Birmingham nightclub, police say

CNN

At least four people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at a nightclub in Birmingham, Alabama, late Saturday night, police said.

Investigators believe at least one person fired shots from the street at the nightclub on 27th Street North, where police found several gunshot victims around 11 p.m. local time, Birmingham police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said in a video message.

Two women inside the nightclub and a man found on a sidewalk near the venue were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Another man died in hospital, according to Fitzgerald.

Several gunshot victims were later taken to hospital, and at least nine people were still being treated early Sunday morning, police said.

Police did not identify any suspects in the shooting and no arrests had been announced as of Sunday morning. It remains unclear what sparked the shooting.

“Investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting and the casualties,” Fitzgerald said. “Our federal partners are on the scene assisting Birmingham police with the investigation.”

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were at least 293 mass shootings in the United States in 2024. Like CNN, the archive defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
