Detectives investigating the discovery of human remains in two suitcases in Bristol are tonight questioning a man who was arrested in Greenwich, south-east London, on Friday morning.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said on Friday evening: “A 36-year-old man was arrested at an address in Greenwich early on Friday 12 July. He was taken into custody and remains there. This is not the same man we are looking for.”

The spokesman did not want to reveal whose name the man was arrested for. He is not the same man that police were looking for yesterday after a photo was published.

Human remains were found in two suitcases near the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol on Wednesday evening. They are believed to be the remains of two adult men. The remains were discovered on Wednesday evening following information from members of the public.

Police have identified a man they wish to speak to and he remains at large. Assistant Chief Constable Andy Valentine, who is leading the investigation for the force, said in an update today: “Over the last 48 hours we have worked very closely with colleagues from Avon and Somerset. This work leads us to believe that the man we need to speak to travelled from London to Bristol in the early hours of Wednesday evening.”

“We are using resources across the force to locate and arrest the suspect and I urge anyone who believes they see him or knows his whereabouts to call 999 immediately.”

“Do not approach him. We recognise that this has caused significant concern among residents in the Clifton area and will also cause concern among people living and working in west London. Extra officers will be on patrol in the area over the coming days and I would encourage anyone who has concerns to speak to them.”
